MIMS bags NABH accreditation

KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) has been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH), an autonomous body set up by the Indian Government to regulate the delivery of quality services in the healthcare industry.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Azad Moopen, chairman, MIMS, and Abdulla Cherayakatt, managing director, said the MIMS had bagged the accreditation competing with well-known and established hospitals in the metros. Leading hospitals including Apollo, Indraprestha, Delhi; Narayana Hrudayala, Bangalore; Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and Escorts Heart Hospital, Delhi had all applied.

MIMS is the first multi-speciality hospital to get NABH accreditation, they claimed.

Out of the 40 hospitals across India who had applied, only 16 hospitals were short-listed and MIMS was the only one from Kerala.

MIMS, an ISO certified organisation since 2002, began the process for getting the NABH accreditation in early 2006 under the guidance of K.K. Varma, former Principal of Kozhikode Medical College.

NABH is a constituent board of Quality Council of India (QCI) set up by the Union Government to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organisations. The board is structured to cater to much-desired needs of the consumers and to set benchmarks for progress of healthcare industry. The board while being supported by all stakeholders, including industry, consumers and Government, has full functional autonomy in its operation.
