Muddbair rallies well

BANGALORE: Muddbair Ahmed, after trailing by one frame to two, rallied to beat L. Raghunandan 61-35, 41-48, 32-44, 57-17, 66-28 in the 37th State senior ranking snooker championship at the KSBA McDowell Hall here on Wednesday.

M.S. Sandeep beat Suresh Rao 58-7, 49-31. Suresh, who came in 10 minutes late for the tie, had to forfeit the first frame. Balaji Reddy accounted for Kunal 80-25, 32-29, 73-32 in another match.

Clean sweep

Surana College claimed both the volleyball and basketball titles in the Bangalore University inter-collegiate championship here on Wednesday. In the volleyball round robin, Surana College topped the league, winning all its three matches beating Siddaganga First Grade College, Seshadripuram Degree College and Govt. First Grade College, Chikkaballapur.

In basketball, Surana College posted three straight wins to win the title. It beat Shree Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College 85-78, CMR College 73-63 and Kristu Jayanthi College 70-51.

Surana College also claimed the M.S. Jayalakshmi Memorial State-level volleyball championship held on October 28 and 29. In the final, Surana College defeated M.S. Ramaiah College 25-13, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16.

Work begins

A track for Fartlek training would be completed at the SAI (South) Centre in Kengeri here by March 2007. Stating this here, Mr. G. Kishore, Regional Director of the SAI (South) said that the track would have unique inclines and declines for effective uphill and downhill training for athletes. Dr. P.C. Kashyap, Executive Director (teams and coaching) of SAI inaugurated the works on the track.

Chess tournaments

Hosur Chess Academy will conduct its monthly chess tournament for children (under-8 and 10 years) at Sree Ayyappa temple hall, 27th Cross, Jayanagar here on November 5. Contact Mr. Chandady (098431 71644).

State judo teams

A 13 member State team will participate in the junior National judo championship scheduled to be held at Chennai from Thursday.

The teams: Boys: 14 to 17 years: Akash V. Allokar, M. Ashok, Navin Kumar, Anil Gadade and R. Rajesh. 17 to 20: Pundalik, Bommanna and K. Sunil. Girls: 14 to 17: V.B. Rekha, Poornima, Gagana Prabhu, K.N. Harinaxi and Rajani R. Patel. 17 to 20: Kutuja, Kavitha, Rohini Patil, Arpitha and Devishree.

ASC `A' advances

Army Service Corps `A' booked its berth in the promotional round-robin league in the State `A' division hockey league tournament with a 2-0 victory over Sports Authority of India `B' here. Ajay Pande (20th) scored off a penalty corner and Poulose (38th) logged the second goal after the break.

In the other inconsequential matches of the league, Maharatta Light Infantry `B' beat Bharat Electronics Limited 5-1 with Saurabh Singh (second & sixth) and Rohit Dung Dung (19th and 45th) notching up a double each. Rajesh Xalco (27th) was the other scorer for the winner while Prakash (55th) scored for BEL.

In the first match, Centre of Excellence blanked Bombers 7-0 with Ramesh (40th & 57th) scoring twice assisted by Gregory Gordon (ninth), Anup Kiran (24th) off a penalty corner, Magesh (44th), Julian Vasnath (51st) and Karthikeyan (59th).
