Chennai : Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin reviewed flood relief measures in waterlogged areas of the city on Tuesday.

Mr. Stalin, accompanied by Mayor M. Subramanian and Chennai Corporation Commissioner M.P. Vijayakumar, inspected the pumping out of water from Parangusapuram in Kodambakkam. The three waded through stagnant water in parts of Velachery including AGS Colony, Ram Nagar and Srinivasa Nagar. Mr. Stalin directed that storm water drains be constructed to carry the run-off.

The Minister said that talks would be held with the Railway officials in charge of the MRTS project to remove sand piles stored for construction of the line in Velachery area. This would help the water to flow out, he said.

Earlier in the day, the Mayor and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President M. Krishnaswamy visited flood-affected parts of Saidapet. The Mayor held a meeting with heads of departments in the Corporation, and said steps would be taken to improve roads, street lighting and management of waste. The performance of Corporation schools would be reviewed to identify and assist schools that were doing poorly.

The existing bridge over the Adyar river at Alandur Road will be replaced by a higher bridge to prevent flooding. The project cost, put at Rs. 5.41 crore, was being re-estimated, he said.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board said power had been restored in the city except in Kargil Nagar (Thiruvottiyur), Vyasarpadi, Ram Nagar, Pallikaranai and Nehru Nagar (VSI Estate).

A release said that the transformers supplying power to these parts were switched off during the heavy rains to avoid accidents.

For power failure complaints, the public can call the round-the-clock helplines at 155333, 28521109 or 28524422. SMS can be sent to 9840901406.
