Three arrested for credit card fraud
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI
: The city crime branch (CCB) police has arrested three persons on charges of cheating by misusing a credit card to withdraw Rs 55,000.
According to a CCB officer attached to the Bank Fraud wing, a case was registered after a complaint by Yasmeen Abbas (50) of MRC Nagar that she lost her credit card recently.
Investigations revealed that the woman was unaware she had lost her card while shopping in Mylapore on October 20. But, two days later she found the card missing and informed her bank.
It was found the card had been used to buy new cell phones worth Rs 55,000 in Mylapore and Anna Nagar showrooms. As the showrooms did not have a closed circuit TV, the shopkeepers were unable to identify the con men.
However, a trader recollected the face of one suspect which enabled the officers to zero in on the accused and recover four mobile handsets and Rs 20,000 cash, the officer said.
Police gave the names of the arrested as Mubarak (30), his brother Sikkander (25) and Muzaffar Gani (35) of Mylapore. A senior CCB officer urged the merchants to verify the identity of the person producing the credit card before concluding a transaction. In the above case, the credit card belonged to a woman, but despite the fact that three males produced it, they were honoured instantly, he noted.
