History of Tamil theatre on BBC Tamil service

R. Sujatha

CHENNAI: BBC's Tamil Service will launch a 10-part series on the history of Tamil theatre from November 5. The series is an acknowledgement of how stage plays have held sway in spite of the upstart, cinema.

The series will sketch the evolution of Tamil theatre from the early days of street drama to contemporary stage plays, and how playwrights adapted to technological changes. Tirumalai Manivannan, head of BBC Tamil, said, "The series will analyse how drama in its 20th century form was used by Tamil leaders as a vehicle to carry their political messages."

Pioneers such as Sankaradas Swamigal, T.K.S. brothers and R.S. Manohar, and artists such as `Sivaji' Ganesan and M.R. Radha will find mention in the series. Interviews with Purisai Sambanda Thambiraan, Cho Ramasamy and Manorama have also been included. Contemporary artists S.Ve. Shekher, `Crazy' Mohan, Pralayan, Mu. Ramasamy and Gnani will also be featured.
