NEW DELHI : The World Meteorological Organisation on Monday presented its Professor Dr. Vilho Vaisala Award for outstanding research paper to Joseph P. Pichamuthu, Professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering at M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bangalore. The award, which carries a cash prize of $10,000, a medal and a diploma, is for his work in the area of meteorological optical range (MOR), which is a parameter of central importance for safe landing of aircraft. A former Deputy Director of CSIR's Bangalore-based National Aerospace Laboratories, Prof. Pichamuthu has found a way to compute the true visual range in any direction under any weather condition.
