CHENNAI: The Rotary Club of Madras Northwest on Thursday presented the Vocational Excellence Award to Dr. Indira Rajagopal, Emeritus Scientist, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore. Presenting the award and the citation, agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan said that when women professionals faced many hurdles in rising to the top, it was a credit that Dr. Indira Rajagopal was able to reach the goal. When the country had to depend on its scientists in the face of sanctions following Pokharan I and II, Dr. Indira Rajagopal provided some critical components for the Indian space programme. The citation signed by T.T. Durairaj Kandiar, president, Rotary Club of Madras Northwest; V. Nataraj, director, Vocational Service; and K.S. Kasi, secretary, said the development processes for the finishing of the Mux-Demux filters, and the fabrication of large aluminium mirrors used as sun shield panels for VHRR of INSAT - II were some of her outstanding contributions to the programme. The development of the radar reflecting paint for ADA for the estimation of radar cross section of aircraft models was another of her important achievements, the citation said. She had to her credit over 170 research publications and 20 patents. She was invited to contribute a chapter on `Composite Coatings' for the Handbook on Surface Modification Technologies published by Marcel Dekker Inc. USA (1990). The scientist attributed her success to her husband, Dr. S.R. Rajagopal, who inspired her to stay in India rather than go abroad for a career. "Ever since I have never looked back," she said, adding that there was immense satisfaction when the products and processes researched and produced were put to good use.
