NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Jaiprakash Narayan Yadav took charge on Wednesday as Minister of State for Water Resources. This is his second stint in the same position in the United Progressive Alliance Government. He had resigned in October 2005 after a criminal case was registered against him during the Assembly elections in the State. After taking charge, Mr. Yadav said that his priority would be better flood management, enhanced irrigation and power generation. For this, he stressed on cooperation with Nepal. The Minister said he would pay due attention to ensure that water was made available to people as well as farmers for irrigation. He underlined the need for increasing irrigation facilities in the country and on timely completion of the pending Accelerated Irrigated Benefit Programme. He avoided answering questions on his alleged "tainted" status saying he had good wishes for everyone on the occasion of Id. Earlier on his arrival, Mr. Yadav was briefed on important issues by the Secretary of Water Resources Gauri Chatterjee and other senior officials of the Ministry. A member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly for four terms during 1980 to 1985 and 1990 to 2004, Mr. Yadav was the State Minister for Water Resources, Primary Education and Adult Education and Minister of Micro Irrigation. In May 2004 he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from the Monghyr constituency in Bihar.
