A window to the e-world for deprived kids

Afterhaving introduced a large number of children, including poor Muslim girls, from Prabhu Basti and Nizamuddin Basti to the world of computers, a socio-cultural organisation will be presenting them with certificates on Friday to encourage them to continue with their education and open up new vistas of learning and opportunity for themselves. The children had undergone a "Basic Computer Education'' programme over the past three to four months during which they got a chance to acquaint themselves with the e-world. The programme had been conducted by Sarayu Mandal, a branch of the All India Women's Conference, in partnership with the Som Dutt Foundation.

The partnership began with Prabhu Basti where two batches of 16 students each were the beneficiaries. The children, who learnt the basics of computers during the programme, would now be felicitated with certificates at a simple ceremony that would be conducted at Community Centre, West Nizamuddin Association Building at 10-30 a.m. on Friday. Manju Kak of Sarayu Mandal, who has been closely associated with the venture, said the Computer Programme that Sarayu initiated with the Som Dutt Foundation began with a very small step. Lekha Shankar's donation of one computer that was installed in one room of the Basti Vikas Kendra at the Prabhu Market exposed these children to technology. -- Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar
