HYDERABAD: An educational kit that promises to improve reading and comprehension skills among students who have poor reading abilities, in Government schools within a short span of 14 weeks, will be launched on Thursday by the Christian Children's Fund-India at Jubilee hall, Public Gardens. The kit was developed by CCF-India after thorough research on the reading abilities of over 500 Government school students in Tirupati showed that students have extremely poor reading abilities and lack basic arithmetic concepts.
Telugu instruction
Dubbed as `Reading Skill Improvement Programme' initially, the kit would be used to teach Telugu to over 300 Government school students from the twin cities. CCF officials point out that very soon a special kit on mathematics to improve the comprehension skills of students would be launched in the State in association with the School Education Department. Interacting with mediapersons here on Wednesday, area manager for CCF-India Saikat De said that the kits consist of a user manual and a set of 191 reading skill improvement cards that will be distributed among teachers who in turn will train the students to use them to improve skills.
Study's finding
"In our study we found that over 70 per cent of students in Government schools have a problem in reading and understanding the languages. We have come out with word cards which will be useful for them in understanding each word and its several usages," said Mr. De. Telugu lecturers from the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) and teachers played a major part on chalking out the educational kit that will be launched on Thursday. According to CCF officials, the educational kit will be launched on a pilot basis in the twin cities before introducing it elsewhere in the State.
