Hansda wins gold

Hansda wins gold

KOLKATA: Palton Hansda gave India its first ever gold medal by winning the junior men's compound title in the ninth junior and third cadet World outdoor championship at Merida, Mexico, on Saturday.

The 17-year-old India No. 1 from Tata Archery Academy (Jamshedpur) defeated the United States' Paul Tedford 113-112.

Two more Indians — Prabhat Kandir in the recurve junior men and Pranitha Vardhineni in the recurve cadet women — also earned individual silver medals.

Kandir, a member of the silver medal winning Indian team in the last worlds at England in 2004, lost the gold medal to Romain Girouille of France 101-107. Pranitha was beaten by Jane Waller of Australia 100-114.
