Shocking

The report (Oct. 21) that Dalits of the Kadkol village in Bijapur are facing an undeclared social and economic boycott by `caste' Hindus since July 25 for daring to collect water from the village tank is shocking. That such practice of untouchability is allowed to continue after over half a century of its abolition is appalling!

The plight of the agricultural labourers should awaken those opposing reservation to the ground realities. They should realise why the policy came into existence and why, after so many years, it is still required.

Rohan D'Souza,
Bangalore

It is a shame to see untouchability rearing its head yet again and pushing innocent people to starvation. The Government should intervene to rescue the victims from economic disaster.

S. Franklin,
Bangalore
