KOCHI: Goshree Action Council has demanded that the district administration and the Motor Vehicles Department take steps to extend bus services from the islands via the Goshree bridges to the city from November when the State would be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Kerala Formation. A press release from the Council said here on Thursday that a memorandum submitted by the Council to the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on August 13, 2005 had demanded the extension of the bus services to the city via Goshree bridges. Mr. Chandy had assured the Council that bus services from the Islands would be extended to the city within a month. However, this had not happened, the press release said. It said that the entry of the buses into the city via the Goshree bridges was initially opposed on the premise that they would add to the traffic congestion in the city. However, when the news of a move to issue fresh permits to 100 more buses and 1,000 autorickshaws in the city became public, the authorities claimed that there are restrictions on issuing permits to private buses for plying nationalised routes. The press release alleged that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorities were trying to protect the interest of private bus owners and that there was a lobby still working against extension of buses from the islands to the city. Under these circumstances it was imperative that Goshree buses be allowed to enter the city from November.
