Renovation of Ministers' residences

  • Youth Congress to launch stir against Kodiyeri and Divakaran
  • `Ministers should repay the excess amount spent'

KOCHI: Youth Congress State president K.P. Anilkumar has said that Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran, who are accused of incurring excess expenditure in renovating their official residences, have violated the oath of office.

Addressing a pres conference here on Thursday, Mr. Anilkumar alleged that the Ministers were lying when they denied any involvement in spending huge amounts for the renovation works. They had also misinformed the Legislative Assembly and the people, he said.

Mr. Anilkumar said the Ministers should be made to repay the excess amount incurred for the renovation works.

He alleged that Mr. Balakrishnan had asked for a new gate and driveway to `Manmohan Bungalow,' his official residence, as per the advice of an astrologer. He said that the leaders of the CPI(M), claiming to be a political party representing the interests of the working class, were leading luxurious life. Both houses were occupied by Ministers before the change of government.

Mr. Anilkumar pointed out that the amounts, Rs. 17.4 lakh spent on Mr. Kodiyeri's official residence and Rs.1 lakh spent on Mr. Divakaran's official residence, were only the figures given by the PWD. The furniture was changed by the Tourism Department and when that cost was also taken into account, the total amount would go up.

The Youth Congress would launch an agitation against the Ministers, he said. He demanded that he CPI(M) and the CPI take appropriate action against them.

Youth Congress leaders Tony Chammini and others took part in the press conference.
