KARUR: The DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) has bagged the majority of councillors in the Karur and Inam Karur Municipalities in Karur district in the local body polls. Counting took place on Wednesday and the results started trickling in later in the evening. The DMK and alliance partners won a comfortable majority in the Karur Municipality securing 26 seats of the total 36. The DMK won 20 seats and the Congress six. The AIADMK bagged the rest 10 seats. In the Inam Karur Municipality, of the total 21 seats, the DPA managed to scrape through with 11 seats DMK (7), Congress (3) and CPI (M) one seat. While the AIADMK bagged six seats, its alliance partner MDMK secured two seats. The Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) managed to get one seat, while an Independent walked away with the honours in one seat. In the Kulithalai Municipality, it was honours even for the rival camps with the AIADMK and MDMK bagging four seats apiece while the DMK secured six and its ally the Congress two seats. Independents hold the key to controlling the civic affairs here with eight of them making it to the council. In the Thanthoni Municipality, of the total 18 seats, DMK won four, AIADMK (2), MDMK, DMDK and Congress (one each) while Independents again showed their strength with nine of them making it to the victory podium. In the town panchayat ward member elections, the DMK has won the maximum 55 seats, followed by the AIADMK (37), Congress (17), MDMK and the DMDK (three each), CPI (M) and PMK (two each) while the Independents have bagged 51 seats.
