VILLUPURAM: Even while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance is maintaining a lead in the local body elections in the district, it has suffered a setback in Villupuram municipal ward No. 10, where Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi has his residence. M. Mallika of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has won the seat by a margin of 19 votes. She polled 416 votes against Congress candidate R. Muthulakshmi's 397 and R. Santha's (Independent) seven. After the results were declared, there was a demand for recount which was not conceded. So far, results have been declared in 28 of the 36 wards. The DMK has got 17, AIADMK 7, PMK 3, and MDMK 1. The DMK candidates for wards 4 and 35 have been elected unopposed. In Tindivanam Municipality, results have been declared in 17 of the 33 wards: DMK 7, AIADMK 4, PMK 3, DPI 1 and Independents 2. In the Kallakurichi Municipality, results are out in 18 of the 21 wards: DMK 5, AIADMK 4, DMDK 2, Congress 1, PMK 1, and Independents 5. The results are known for 157 of the 243 Town Panchayats. The DMK got 59, AIADMK 41, Congress 14, DMDK 6, PMK 3, MDMK 2, DPI 2, and Independents 30.
