TIRUCHENOGDE/KOMARAPALAYAM: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), it appears, is all set to retain Tiruchengode Municipality, one of the biggest in the region.

In Komarapalayam Municipality all the results in 33 wards have been declared. DMK gets 13 seats and Congress one, AIADMK 14, MDMK one, Independents two and DMDK two.

In Komarapalayam, Independents and DMDK candidates hold the key to the chairman's post.

Of the 33 wards in the Tiruchengode Selection Grade Municipality, results for only 17 wards were available. Counting is on for the others. Among the 17, DMK emerged victorious in nine, Congress three, AIADMK three, CPI one and Independents one.

DMK bagged wards 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 20. Congress won wards 4 and 5 and the Left party secured ward 11. Notable among the winners is R. Natesan (DMK) from Ward 8. He was the chairman in the last Council and is expected to be re-elected.

With two more rounds of counting remaining, DMK is expected to have a majority of its own. In the previous council, too, it had an independent majority.

Contrasting Tiruchengode's result, Komarapalayam, with 33 wards, has given almost equal seats to DMK and AIADMK. While DMK has bagged nine, AIADMK is close behind with eight.

Independents have bagged two seats, and MDMK and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) one each. In Pallipalayam, of the 20 wards for which results have been declared, DMK secured seven, AIADMK five, MDMK two, DMDK five and Independents five. Significant in this local body election is that DMDK has opened account in all three civic bodies in the region.

Earlier in the day, counting began with adequate security and in a peaceful manner in all three civic bodies in the region.
