A setback

The Gujarat High Court's order declaring the constitution of the U.C. Bannerjee Committee by the Railway Ministry to probe the Godhra carnage illegal and unconstitutional is a serious setback to the UPA Government. One wonders what useful purpose commissions serve except draining the exchequer.

H.P. Murali,
Bangalore

The submission of the Bannerjee Committee's interim report just two days before the Bihar elections and its findings, which included the fire-by-accident theory, it appears, were motivated. Unfortunately, instead of sympathising with the victims of the S-6 coach and providing relief to them, the UPA Government has politicised the issue.
