Contractors do shoddy work after digging up roads in Kapra

HYDERABAD: Dial 23238888, the Ranga Reddy district helpline number, and the response is prompt. But there is no guarantee that the complaint would be addressed to, since there is no follow-up.

This feeling of several residents of Raghavendra Nagar in Nacharam under Kapra Municipality reflects how official apathy continues despite the best of methods put in to address people's problems. The residents lodged a complaint about an open nala and a missing cover of a manhole right at the centre of a road six months back. They followed up the issue more than 15 times, but the work is yet to be done.

Mosquito menace

"The open nala breeds mosquitoes while the uncovered manhole is posing danger to motorists but we are continuing to live with it," says Gupta, a resident of the area. The road was dug a few months back while laying water pipelines and the manhole cover was also removed for smooth work. Since then it remained uncovered. Meanwhile, continuous digging of road further shrunk it and there is a big opening now in the middle of the road.

The shrunken nala due to the shrinking of road has led to water stagnation, that has literally turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. And officials continue to ignore it despite the spread of dengue and chikungunya.

"There were conflicting answers when we approached officials," says a resident. While the helpline records show that the work is done, local officials claim that work has been sanctioned and the contractor would start the work soon.

Several roads in the colony have also been dug up, but the contractors have done a shoddy job and the residents want the officials to act fast.
