KOCHI: MES Udyogamandal School won the overall title in the all-Kerala ISC/ICSE inter-school badminton tournament at the FACT Udyogamandal Club, Eloor. The school won nine out of the ten titles. Final placings: Primary, boys' singles: 1. M.R. Arjun (MES Udyogamandal, Eloor), 2. Daryl Davis (Harisri Vidyanidhi, Tsr). ICSE, boys' singles: 1. Ram Vivek (MES Udyl), 2. Lovers XI wins
Lovers XI scored a 10-run win over Packers CC in the Canara Bank-TDCA `C' division cricket league at the Medical College ground in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. In a low-scoring encounter, batting first Lovers XI was bundled out for 126 with Sreekumar (four for 32) and Anand (four for 23) doing the damage. But Lovers's bowlers, led by Sooraj (four for 28), hit back to dismiss Packers for 116 with only Sulfikar (38) offering some resistance. The scores: Lovers 126 in 25 overs (Anand four for 23, Sreekumar four for 32) bt Packers 116 in 26.1 overs (Sooraj four for 28).
Cycle Brand Kids wins
Medium-pacer Vilas N. Kutty's five-wicket haul went in vain as Muthoot Ernakulam CC lost to Cycle Brand Kids (Thiruvananthapuram) by 58 runs in the first-phase quarterfinal of the 56th Pooja all-India cricket tournament at the Palace Oval, Tripunithura, on Wednesday. The Kids thrived on a fine all-round performance from V.S. Shiju (32 and three for 31). The scores: Cycle Brand Kids CC, Tvm 160 in 43 overs (Vilas N. Kutty five for 19) bt Muthoot Ernakulam CC 102 in 22.2 overs (D. Saju four for 40).
Cricket trials
Trials to select the Pathanamthitta district U-13 cricket team will be held at 9 a.m. on Oct.14 at the Mar Thoma College ground, Pathanamthitta. Those born on or after Sept.1, 1993, are eligible to take part. Interested players can report at the venue with their playing kits and relevant age proof documents.
Chess tournament
The second Varuna inter-school chess tournament, organised by the Parent Teacher Association of the Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya, begins at Thrikkakara on Thursday. Competitions will be held in individual and team events in LP (classes 1 to 4), UP (5 to 7) and HS (8 to 12) sections at the two-day meet.
