North Korea's n-test

As expected, North Korea has tested a nuclear bomb. There are many more countries that are capable of making nuclear weapons. It is not possible for the U.S. or the United Nations to stop them by threats of economic sanctions. The problem is not nuclear proliferation but nuclear weapons as pointed out by Ramesh Thakur in the article "North Korea & envisioning alternative nuclear futures" (Oct. 11). And the solution is not non-proliferation but nuclear disarmament.

A.V.A. Eswaran,
New Delhi

The article deserves praise for stressing on nuclear disarmament and abolition. No doubt, the U.S. is to blame for pushing North Korea into the nuclear club with its confrontationist posture. One only hopes it will pursue dialogue and diplomacy with Iran, for another nuclear power will be a catastrophe. The U.N. needs to play a more decisive role.

Siddarth K. Raj,
New Delhi

The temptation to blame American policy for everything should be resisted. Instead, nations should unite to evolve a strong and meaningful response to bring countries such as North Korea and Iran to discussions on a peaceful future. A solution is certainly not beyond the collective wisdom of humankind.

Anand Datla,
Secunderabad
