CHENNAI: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has appealed to the North Chennai electorate to cast their vote in the local body elections, keeping in mind the prevailing "congenial relationship" between the State and the Centre. Mr. Chidambaram was addressing a public meeting at Kolathur in support of Congress candidate for ward No. 62 Shenbagavalli,. He said it was essential for the State to have a congenial relationship with the Centre for the benefits to reach the common man.
Promises fulfilled
He congratulated the DMK Government and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for implementing the promises made in the election manifesto, including supply of rice at Rs.2 a kg, distribution of colour televisions to poor households and 2 acres to landless labour. Mr. Chidambaram said Ms. Shenbagavalli was a pillar of strength in the Mahila wing, who had helped to alleviate the sufferings of self-help group women. AICC member and son of the Finance Minister, Karthi Chidambaram, and Deputy Mayor of Chennai Corporation Karate R. Thyagarajan were present at the Kolathur meeting. The Minister then drove to Veerasamy Street at Egmore and addressed another public meeting before leaving by the night train for Tiruchi.
