Action sought against headmaster

Special Correspondent

Education Department told to compulsorily retire him for fund misappropriation Education Department told to compulsorily retire him and recover the amount

GULBARGA: Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey has directed the Education Department officials to send a proposal to the Government to compulsorily retire the headmaster of the Government Primary School in Siddartha Nagar area in Tellur village in Chitapur taluk for allegedly misappropriating Rs. 54,800 provided for the construction of classrooms in the school under the Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan.

He was responding to a complaint in this regard from the people of Tellur village at the monthly district-level grievances redressal meeting here on Saturday. People complained about the failure of the Education Department to recover the money from the erring headmaster and make payment to the contractor who had completed construction of classrooms.

Department officials informed the Deputy Commissioner that under the Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan, Rs. 3.45 lakh was released for the construction of classrooms.

However, when the contractor complained that he was not paid for the work, the department conducted an inquiry and found that Rs. 85,200 was misappropriated by the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) and the headmaster had misappropriated Rs. 54,800. During the inquiry, the headmaster had given in writing admitting to misuse of funds. The department recovered building material worth Rs. 85,200 from SDMC members. However, the headmaster failed to return the misappropriated funds despite many reminders and did not turn up at the school citing ill-health.

Mr. Pandey directed department officials to compulsorily retire the headmaster and recover the amount due from him from his retirement benefits.
