HYDERABAD: City legislators and Parliament members have opposed the Government's decision to handover the land that houses old Gandhi Medical College for development as an entertainment centre and want the same to be allotted for the office the Hyderabad Collectorate. The issue was raised by all the MLAs, including G. Kishen Reddy, Akbaruddin Owaisi, Nayani Narsimha Reddy, P. Janardhan Reddy, T. Padma Rao, M. Shashidhar Reddy, Sayanna and the MPs V. Hanumantha Rao, P. Madhu and Asaduddin Owaisi at the Hyderabad District Review Committee meeting held here on Thursday.
`Hasty decision'
They said the Basheerbagh road was already choked and such projects would throw traffic out of gear. The place was apt for the Collectorate to come up accommodating offices of all the departments. They were angry that a hasty decision was taken without consulting the city MLAs. Despite heated discussion for over 45 minutes and the public representatives wanting a resolution to be passed at the meeting, District in-charge Minister Mohd. Ali Shabber did not yield. He said the previous Government had taken a decision to transfer the land to the Tourism Department to enable some private parties to set up an entertainment centre to raise money for paying back the costs incurred on the newly built Gandhi Medical College and the hospital at Musheerabad. He, however, assured the members that the Hyderabad Collectorate would be shifted to more spacious premises at Masab Tank and efforts to identify the land were on. Khairatabad MLA P. Janardhan Reddy questioned the Government and officials' motive in allowing illegal structures to come up in the city in the name of entertainment. He asked as to how the officials gave permission to Hyderabad Central flouting all the norms? Officials were bombarded with questions on shortage of kerosene and LPG cylinders and cut in kerosene supply to some consumers.
