TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has recommended to the University Grants Commission (UGC) the conferment of degree granting status to St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi, with effect from the next academic year, 2007-08. If approved by the UGC, it will be the first degree granting college of the country. The syndicate of the university chose the 162-year-old institution for the status in consideration of its track record of successful autonomy of 28 years and acquisition of five-star accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), the Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu, said on Thursday. He was presenting the university's 23rd convocation report. The eligibility norms set by the university for according the status are: 75 years of existence, 25 years of autonomy and five star or B Plus accreditation of NAAC. By virtue of the status, the college can grant degrees using its own label and exercise autonomy in totality. The need to seek approval of the university to start new courses is obviated. The university's role will be limited to reviewing the status once in five years. With the safeguard of continued financial aid from the Government, the college could practically function like a deemed university.
