Chandigarh boys enter last four

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: One-sided contests continued in the Subroto Cup (under-14) football tournament even after the competition has entered the semifinal stage at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday.

Facing Dimapur's Government Higher Secondary School for a place in the last four, Chandigarh's Government Model School raced to a 5-0 victory, a margin way beyond the expectation of its coach Jitender Sharma.

"Honestly, we expected the boys from Nagaland to be much better and had prepared for a stiffer challenge," said Jitender Sharma soon after the Chandigarh team's runaway triumph.

"Now I am looking forward to a close contest in the semifinal so that my boys get tested well," said the coach and made no secret of his displeasure at the standard of competition even beyond the league stage in this 32-team field.

The Chandigarh boys struck four goals in the space of eight minutes in the first half and put the result beyond doubt. Gagandeep put the finishing touches to moves in the 13th and 21st minutes. In between, Baljinder struck twice in as many minutes.

In the second session, even as the Nagaland boys tried in vain, Ramanjot's firmly struck free kick from the central circle, just inside the Dimapur's half, sailed into the goal. Indeed, it was an amazing effort from an under-14 player.

Kathmandu's Allied Co-Education School drubbed Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa School, Jabalpur, 9-0. Sujal Shrestha (three), Bishal Rai (two), Sushil, Suman Khadka, Rupesh and Niraj Remi Magar completed the tally.

Earlier, Sepon High School, Assam, thrashed Varanasi's Shri Kamlakar Choubey Adarsh Seva Vidyalaya 5-2. Jalil Ali, Indukamal Gogoi (two each) and Ajay Banik Das scored for the winning team.

For the Varanasi school, Trilok Kumar Patel converted a `penalty' before Vivek Yadav scored.

Dhaka's Krira Shikkha Protishthan defeated the local Mamta Modern School 1-0, with Abdullah Al Mamun finding the target.

Pune's Loyala High School received a walk over from Sri Lanka's Hewavittharana Mahavidyalaya Rajagirilya.

Dwarka beats Cosmos

Dwarka Club upstaged Cosmos Club 2-1 in a Delhi Soccer Association's `B' division league match at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

Love and Rajiv Sandry scored for Dwarka before Chandan found the goal for Cosmos. Dwarka has six points from five games and Cosmos, 13 from six outings.

In another match at the Nehru Stadium (East), Shakti Club rallied to hold Young Sports 1-1. Jagdish scored following a 35-yard free-kick. Shakti Club equalised through Prem in the closing moments.
