THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Host Thiruvananthapuram scored a one-wicket win over Ernakulam to lift the State senior women's cricket title at the Medical College ground here on Thursday. Having bowled out Ernakulam for 111 in 34.5 overs, the home team was in trouble before a 33-run unbeaten partnership between Ameena and Sonia steered it to victory with 3.1 overs to spare. Pathanamthitta defeated Kozhikode by one run to claim the third spot. The KCA President, S.K. Nair, gave away the trophies. The scores: Final: Ernakulam 111 in 34.5 overs (T. Padma four for 35) lost to Thiruvananthapuram 112 for nine in 36.5 overs. Third place: Pathanamthitta 111 in 25 overs bt Kozhikode 114 in 33.5 overs (Rincy 40).
TDCA selection trials
The Thiruvananthapuram District Cricket Association will conduct trials to select the district U-17 team. Only those who are born after 31-8-1989 are eligible to take part. Those interested should register their names at the KCA office between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. before Oct. 7. The date and time of the trials will be announced later.
Vipin Lal shines
Vipin Lal scored 127 to guide host Kannur to a 119-run win over Malappuram in the opening match of the North Zone senior inter-district cricket championship in Thalassery on Thursday. The scores: Kannur 315 for five in 41 overs (Vipin Lal 127, Diju Das 76) bt Malappuram 196 in 34.1 overs (Arun 70, Jigeesh 44, Valeed five for 43, Vilas N. Kutty three for 55).
Cash awards for badminton players
The Engineers Club badminton tournament organising committee has decided to present cash awards to Kerala's most outstanding badminton players in the under-16 age group during its forthcoming South India tournament in Kochi. A three-member committee, comprising Markose Bristow, Jaseel P. Ismail and Thomas Kurian, has been formed to select a male and female player for the award, which will be given away by Prakash Padukone at 4 p.m. on October 13 at the Regional Sports Centre.
Sumaj sets record
K.V. Sumaj (CET) set a new record in the Kerala University inter-collegiate powerlifting championship at the University Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. Sumaj, with a combined lift of 487.5kg, finished way ahead of other competitors and set a new mark in the 56kg category. SD College, Alappuzha, won the overall title with 22 points. MG College, Thiruvananthapuram, with came second with 15 points. The results (winners only): 52kg: V.J. Joly (SD College) 455kg (squat: 175kg, bench: 90kg, dead: 190kg). 56kg: K.V. Sumaj (CET) 487.kg NMR (190+97.5+200). 67.5kg: A.U. Arun (Mar Ivanios College) 435kg (175+60+200). 75kg: K.C. Aneesh (SD College) 550kg (215+102.5+232.5). 82.5kg: R. Karthik (SD College) 445kg (170+97.5+177.5). 100kg: Arun Satheesh (MG College) 465kg (170+110+185). 125kg: Jayakrishnan (SNC, Cherthala) 430kg (160+90+180). Above-125kg: Harikrishnan (MG College) 330kg (130+60+140). Team championship: 1. SD College, Alappuzha (22 points), 2. MG College, Thiruvananthapuram (15).
