CHENNAI : The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) will be hosting a three-day post-graduate course in diabetology, in association with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), from Friday to enable doctors for practical management of diabetes. V. Mohan, president and director of MDRF said that 32 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes across India in 2000 according to statistics of the World Health Organisation. It is expected to increase to about 80 million people by 2030. The MDRF estimates that about 40-44 million people across the country have been affected in 2006. Though India is in need of doctors trained in diabetology, there were no formal degree courses. So, the foundation has organised the course for the third time in Chennai along with ADA to provide physicians information about basic aspects of diabetes and the latest development in the field, he said. The course, which is being organised every two years, with updated information will have about 1,300 delegates participating from across India and also countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The course, which is priced at Rs.7,000, would cover subjects such as type 2 diabetes in childhood, diagnosis and management of gestational diabetes and how to prevent diabetes. Besides listening to lectures and a symposium on diabetic retinopathy, the participating doctors would also have opportunity to meet the experts during sessions. There would also be panel discussions, case studies and live demonstrations of emerging techniques in diabetes apart from debates on use of certain drugs to treat type 2 diabetes and prevention of type 2 diabetes in children, Dr. Mohan said. The course to be conducted at Chennai Convention Centre at Nandambakkam would have six international faculty including Larry C. Deeb, president of the ADA and 40 senior diabetologists across India as national faculty. For details about registrations, contact the foundation at 28359048/51 or email at drmohans@vsnl.net.
