BANGALORE: Additional Chief Secretary Malathi Das took over as Chief Secretary to the Government here on Saturday.

She is the first woman IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre to be appointed Chief Secretary although Teresa Bhattacharya, who succeeded her husband B.K. Bhattacharya, was the first woman IAS officer to be appointed to the post.

Outgoing Chief Secretary B.K. Das handed over charge to Dr. Malathi Das at a brief ceremony. Several senior IAS and IPS officials, including the Director-General and Inspector General of Police B.S.Sial and Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Sudhakar Rao, were present.

Dr. Malathi Das has a brief tenure of three months.

The State will have a new Chief Secretary from January 1, 2007 and the next in line is the Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner A.K. Agarwal who retires in mid-2007.

Dr. Malathi Das told presspersons that she would focus on reducing the regional imbalance and various other issues pertaining to administration.

Attention would also be paid to file clearance although the new electronic clearance system had helped the Government in monitoring file clearance, she added. Asked about redressal of public grievances, she said the "Jana Spandana" programme in the districts was successful and it would be further strengthened. The new Chief Secretary, who belongs to the 1970 batch of the IAS, has been Additional Chief Secretary since September 1, 2004 and has held several important positions.

She has a doctorate in political science.
