Avinash Singh starts off in style

Chennai: Avinash Singh of Madras Engineering Group gave a brilliant start to the South Zone men's boxing championship at the Nehru Indoor Stadium open ring here on Saturday with an unanimous points decision over Raghuveer of Andhra Pradesh in the lightfly class.

In fact, the first three boxers scored unanimous points victories unleashing sharp punches and showing good defence. The MEG pugilists lifted the standard of the bouts with their superb show of skills.

Classy show

In lightfly category, A. Nithyanandan of Tamil Nadu `A' exhibited the same control and class as Avinash to defeat R. Ramesh of Karnataka, while in the flyweight section, N. Kumar, a tall and lean man, virtually toyed with M. Kiran Kumar of Kerala, punching at will.

G. Arujun of MEG had a bleeding cut in the second round, but the sturdy Armyman cornered V.P.Prabhakar of Andhra Pradesh and hammered him in the lightweight class. S. Prem Kumar, a stocky MEG boxer who participated for Tamil Nadu `A', did not give any chance to V. Sathya of Andhra Pradesh as his punches shook the latter throughout the bout in the lightwelter class.

B. Prem Kumar of Andhra Pradesh too showed similar class against A. Suresh of Kerala, who retired in the second round.

Mr. G.A. Rajkumar, IAS, Secretary, Youth Affairs, inaugurated the event. Mr. M.V.N. Velmurugan, CEO, Velammal Education Trust, presided.

Bantam: K. Baskar (TN `A') lost to S. Gopi (TN `B').

Feather: Sathishkumar (Kar) bt Manjeet Kumar (AP) on points.

Light: G. Arjun (MEG) bt V.P. Prabhakar (AP) on points.

Lightwelter: V. Sathya (AP) lost to S. Prem Kumar (TN `A') on points.

Welter: A. Suresh (Ker) lost to B. Prem Kumar (AP) retd. Middle: Md. Eliaz Ahmed (AP) lost to S. Rajesh (TN `A') retd.; R. Rajesh (TN `B') bt Parvez Ahmed (Kar) on points. Lightheavy: Thanga Kumar (TN `A') lost to Govindaraj (Kar) RSC (outclassed). Heavy: K. Raviraj (Ker) lost to Tharapathi (TN `A') RSC o/c; K.M. Ganesh (Kar) bt P.R. Srikanth Yadav (AP) retd.
