Dusthagir assured of title

Tuticorin: Dusthagir Ibrahim of Madurai is assured of the title, with a round to spare, in the 19th SPIC Trophy FIDE-rated open chess tournament at Tuticorin. On Saturday, he drew with P. Phoobalan of ICF in the tenth and penultimate round and continues to be the sole leader with 9 points. Three players, top seed International master D.P. Singh of Jharkand, Balasubramanian Ramanathan and Vinoth Kumar of Chennai are on the second spot with 8 points each.

Important results (tenth round): M. Dusthagir Ibrahim (9) drew with P. Phoobalan (7.5); Ramanathan Balasubramanian (8) bt R.R. Laxman (7.5); C. Natarajan (7) lost to D.P. Singh (8); Vinoth Kumar (8) bt Syed Anwar Shazuli (7); M.B. Muralidharan (7) drew with P. Stanley Samson (7); P. Shyam Nikil (7.5) bt Vishnu Prasanna (6.5); M. Kunal (6.5) lost to S. Nitin (7.5).

Indian Bank leads table

Indian Bank (Chennai) recovered after losing the first set to beat Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) 19-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 to post its third win in the State-level invitation prize money volleyball tournament at Karaikudi on Friday night. Indian Bank now leads the table with six points in the five-team league.

Indian Overseas Bank recorded its second win defeating Sports Hostel of Excellence (Chennai) 29-27, 25-23, 23-17 and is in second spot with 5 points along with Integral Coach Factory, Chennai which also has the same points.

Hockey league

The SDAT Madurai District Hockey Association league will be conducted at Madurai in the second week of October. Entries close on October 7. Call 93441-28063 for further details.

Town HC triumphs

Town Hockey Club won the Ramanathapuram District Hockey Association league title defeating D.D. Vinayagar HSS 7-5 via the tie-breaker in the final at Ramanathapuram recently. At the end of regulation time the score was level at 3-3.

The results (final): Town HC 7 (Duraimurugan 3, Arjunan 2, Jayamurugan, Jeyachandran) bt D.D. Vinayagar HSS 5 (Naween 2, Balamurugan, Ganeshan, K. Sathianathan).

Third Place: Syed Ammal HSS 6 (Vinoth Kumar 3, G. Naga Balu, Dinesh Kumar, Saravanan) bt Syed Hameediya Arts and Science College, Kilakarai 3 (Arivu 2, Sunil Kumar).

SJCE takes trophy

St. Joseph's College of Engineering (Chennai) clinched the title defeating Sona Engineering College (Salem) 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 in the final of the Anna University inter-zone women's volleyball tournament at Tirunelveli on Saturday.

In the third place match, Sengunthar College of Engineering, Perundurai beat Kamaraj College of Engineering, Virudhunagar 25-21, 25-21.

In the inter-zone combined team final zone-3 beat zone-10.

District-level meet

The Madurai Unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu will be conducting the district level athletics meet on October 5 and games in various disciplines on October 6 and 7.

Arulandar prevails

Arulandar College (Karumathur) prevailed over host GTN Arts College (Dindigul) 11-10 via sudden death in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University `B' zone inter-collegiate football tournament at Dindigul on Saturday. After regulation time, the teams were locked goalless. In the tiebreaker, the teams scored five goals each.

Earlier results: GTN bt Madura College 2-0 (Rajalingam, Paramasivam); Arulanandar beat Vivekanda, Thiruvedagam 2-0 (Selvakumar, Raja scored).

SRM takes honours

SRM College pipped Annamalai University 60-59 in an exciting final of the State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament at Virudhunagar on Friday.

In the inter-school tournament final, American College HSS beat MSP Solai Nadar Memorial HSS 50-40 to take the trophy.

Balakrishnan takes title

K. Balakrishnan of Chennai claimed the boys' title defeating T. Kamesh of Chennai 10-25, 25-11, 25-12, while M. Parimala Devi of Chennai won the girls' title beating V. Sri Vidya of Madurai 25-0, 25-16 in the finals of the Tamil Nadu State Youth carrom championship at Sivakasi on Friday.

Chess tournament

Velammal Chess Club will conduct a chess tournament for boys and girls (under-8, u-10, u-12, u-19) at Velammal Matriculation HSS, Thiruppuvanam (Sivagangai District) on October 7. For further details contact tournament director, S.N. Sekar Singh on 954574-265301 or 9865522315.

SRNC dethrones MSS

S. Ramasamy Naidu College (Sattur) toppled defending champion MSS Wakfboard College (Madurai) 3-1 via the tie-breaker to clinch the title in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University `A' zone inter-collegiate football tournament at Sivakasi on Saturday. The teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time.
