Augustine, Sharang share lead

BANGALORE: A. Augustine and M.S. Sharang shared the lead with 4.5 points each at the end of the fifth round in the State under-9 chess championship at the State Youth Centre here on Saturday. Sharang defeated H.S. Kaushik in the fifth round and earlier in the third round he stunned the fancied M. Savik. Priyadarshini emerged as the sole leader in the girls' section with .5 points after defeating Shalon Pias in the fourth round.

The results: Boys Under-9 (fifth round): K.S. Pranav (3.5) lost to Augustine (4.5); M.S. Sharang (4.5) bt H.S. Kaushik (3.5); Aditya Pai (3) lost to M. Satvik (4); Atishay Samuel (4) bt S. Verma (3); S. Gokul (3) lost to Akshay Bharadwaj (4).

Under-7 (fourth round): Rajath Jain (3) lost to Ananthram (4); Sujith Ramesh (4) bt S. Vishal (3); Arjun Bharath (3) bt K.C. Prayakth (2); Pradhan Bengre (3) bt Sanjeev Krishan (3); Prashanth (3) bt Ajay Jeffrey (2).

Girls Under-9 (fourth round): M. Priyadarshini (3.5) bt Shalon Pias (3); Andrea D'Souza (3) bt Anusha (2.5); Gangamma (3) bt Sahana (2).

Under-7 (fourth round): Tulsi (4) bt Ankita (3); Rashmi Kamath (2) lost to Neha (3); Panchami Shenoy (3) bt Swathi Bliga (2).

ASC Boys hold MEG 2-2

ASC Boys rallied to hold MEG 2-2 after trailing 0-2 at half-time in the D.S. Murthy and V. Karunakaran Memorial State-level hockey tournament at the KSHA Stadium here on Saturday. Povanna's early strikes (in the sixth and 10th minutes) put MEG ahead and ASC Boys fought back into contention with a spirited display after the break.

Roshan Belliappa scored in the 40th minute off an indirect penalty hit and that was quickly followed by B.M.Chengappa's goal in the 42nd, which restored the parity and helped ASC Boys to share the honours.

State handball

The Bapuji College of Physical Education and the Davangere District Handball Association will conduct the State Championship at Davangere from October 14 to 16. The State squad for the senior National Handball Championship, to be held at Bilaspur from November 21 to 27, would be selected after the State meet.

Kodagu teams triumph

Kodagu District teams in the boys and girls under-14 section and girls under-17 category won the titles respectively in the Mysore Divisional-level under-17 and 14 basketball tournament conducted by DDPI, Mysore's Physical Education Department, at Mysore on Saturday.

Mangalore won the boys under-17 title. The results:

Boys: Under-17: Final: Mangalore bt Mysore 48-12. (Semifinals): Mysore bt Udupi 42-25; Mangalore bt Kodagu 39-28. Best players: Gautham (Udupi) and Nishanth (Kodagu).

Under-14: Final: Kodagu bt Chickmaglur 27-14. (Semifinals): Chickmaglur bt Mysore 20-10; Kodagu bt Hassan 14-13. Best players: P.B. Belliappa and Vinay.

Girls: Under-17: Final: Kodagu bt Mandya 43-24. (Semifinals): Mandya bt Hassan 23-10; Kodagu bt Chickmaglur 37-8. Best players: Ramya (Kodagu) and Sindhu (Mandya).

Under-14: Final: Kodagu bt Mandya 10-2. (Semifinals): Kodagu bt Udupi 30-2; Mandya bt Hassan 16-8. Best players: Kavyashree (Mandya) and Kruthika (Kodagu).

Anil Kumar wins

K.A. Anil Kumar returned with a two-day aggregate gross score of 153 to clinch the Indian Estate Open stroke-play (0-18) gross title in the Indian Estate Open golf tournament at the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Course here recently.

The results:

Stroke-play gross (0-18) (36 holes): 1. K.A. Anil Kumar (153 gross); 2. Capt. Dhara (157).

Stroke-play net (0-18) (36 holes): 1. Yashas Chandra (132 net); 2. C.K. Subramani (136).

Stableford net (0-18) (36 holes): 1. Gaffar Iqbal (76 points); 2. B.G. Uttaiah (75).

Stroke-play net (19-24) (36 holes): 1. Dheemanth C. Mehtha (135 net); 2. Dr. Anil Thomas Merit (139).

Stableford net (0-24): 1. S.K. Lakshminarayan (78 points); 2. M.S. Raju (69).

Stableford gross (0-18) (18 holes): S. Dinesh Kumar (29 points); 2. V. Sunil (28).
