NEW DELHI: The spotlight was on Seema Antil on the concluding day of the AFI-Salwan International throws meet on Saturday. But the national record holder could not come up to expectations and finished a poor second to Chinese Sun Taifeng in the women's discus competition. The sparse gathering at the Salwan Public School, which is Seema's training ground when home, went back rather disappointed as the Haryana girl, who holds the national record at 64.64m, recorded just 57.04, nothing very encouraging in the Asian Games context. That throw, on her third attempt, happened to be Seema's best as the Chinese, third ranked back home, struck the gold with a fifth round throw of 62.98 metres. She also had two other throws of 60 metres or more and one of 59.94. The third-placed Krishna Poonia, who like Seema, was just back from a training trip in Ukraine, recorded 54.80 while Harwant Kaur was fourth with 53.46m. With the majority of the top Indian athletes playing truant, the spotlight remained on the foreign contestants on the concluding day. Indian javelin throwers Anil Kumar and Om Narayan were reportedly stranded in Kiev on their return from a training stint while Jagdish Bishnoi was said to be nursing an injury. Not that the Indian presence would have mattered a great deal to the Asian Games champion from China, Li Rongxiang. He nailed the javelin gold with a throw of 78.14, well below his best of 84.29, but well ahead of the rest. The best Indian performance was by Sunil Goswami who recorded 71.25 for the fifth place.
