NEW DELHI: A seventh semester medical student at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) who was admitted to the hospital on Thursday evening with dengue, died on Saturday afternoon. "The student, Raj Kiran, was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and collapsed the same night with excessive bleeding in the brain. He was operated upon on Friday morning to drain out the excess blood. However, his condition did not improve and he died this afternoon," a senior physician at the AIIMS said. "On Saturday, four more students were admitted with symptoms of dengue, taking the total number of students and hospital staff admitted with similar symptoms to 19." Institute authorities said instructions had been issued to ensure that the incidence of dengue in the hostels and residential areas within AIIMS premises be controlled. "All support staff have been asked to keep a close watch for any signs of mosquito breeding around the hospital premises, hostels and doctors' residences. Instructions have been issued to remove garbage and stagnated water from near the AIIMS boundary walls and to keep water coolers clean," an AIIMS official said. A medical student at the AIIMS said: "We have been complaining about poor hygiene in our hostels. However, we are yet to get a proper response. Now with a student's death, the administration has taken some hasty action."
General alert
Medical colleges in the city have issued a general alert. The college authorities, however, maintain that there was no cause for panic.
