Gebrselassie triumphs

BERLIN: Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia won the Berlin Marathon in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 56 seconds on Sunday — one minute slower than the World record.

In 2003, Paul Tergat of Kenya ran the fastest-ever time of 2:04:55 on the same flat course where five world records have been set in nine years.

Shentema Kudama of Ethiopia finished second in 2:10:43, with Kurao Umeki of Japan third in 2:13:43. Gete Wami made it an Ethiopian sweep by winning the women's race in 2:21:34 at the third stop of the five World Marathon majors. Salina Kosgei of Kenya was second in 2:23:22, followed by Poland's Monica Drybulski in 2.30.12. — AP
