Tirunelveli is champion

TIRUCHI: Tirunelveli edged out Chennai 6-5 via sudden death tiebreaker to win the title in the senior State hockey championship conducted by the Tiruchi District Hockey Association here on Sunday.

With the two teams deadlocked at 0-0 till the end of the allotted time, the match was forced into a tiebreaker. Tirunelveli's goalkeeper Shanmughsundaram was the hero of the day.

G.A. Raj Kumar, Secretary, Youth Affairs and Sports Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, gave away the prizes in the presence of K. Jothi Kumaran, Secretary General, Indian Hockey Federation.

Madurai defeated Tiruchi 2-1 and clinched the third spot.

The results:

Final: Tirunelveli bt Chennai 6-5 (via sudden death tiebreaker).

Third place: Madurai 2 (Rajesh Kannan, Sathyaseelan) bt Tiruchi 1 (Swarnabalan).

Semifinals: Chennai bt Tiruchi 7-6 (via sudden death tiebreaker); Tirunelveli 2 (Moses, Parthibhan) bt Madurai 0. — Sports Reporter
