Uthra shocks Nabeela

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: P. Uthra, a tenth standard student of Velammal School shocked her Chennai teammate and eighth seed Nabeela Farheen in the second round of the 33rd St. Joseph's National women's `B' chess championship here on Wednesday.

It was one of the biggest surprises on a day of upsets. Uthra had been making headlines for the last two years winning against bigger names. Her victory against Nabeela came after a long bishop ending.

Fast rising Maharashtra player, Ketaki Kulkarni shocked seasoned R. Sanggeetha (formerly M.R. Sangeetha) of Tamil Nadu by winning her queen in the middlegame with a knight check. J. Mohana Priya of Modern School, Chennai, justified her AICF entry by holding third seed Kiran Monisha Mohanty of Bhubaneswar to a creditable draw in 33 moves.

Harini stuns Bhakti

Tamil Nadu state under-25 girls champion S. Harini shocked Asian under-14 champion Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa. Harini is a twelfth standard student of Rosily Matriculation School in Chitlapakkam.

Among the 19 leaders on full two points is S. Sujatha who beat Prachi Thite. Prachi did not realise that her knight move on the thirteenth turn was a serious mistake until Sujatha produced a double attack on the queen and knight to win in 17 moves. Nine rounds remain to be played.
