TIRUPATI: High drama was witnessed on the Veterinary University campus here on Tuesday when three senior B.V.Sc. students allegedly tried to rag a `fresher', Anil, from Kurnool. The incident came to light when mediapersons accidentally emerged on the scene and tried to resolve the issue. The college authorities and the senior students, however, joined issue with the mediapersons for `interfering' in what they termed as a `routine practice' on any campus during `fresher day' fetes. Mediapersons, who were participating in various sporting events on the Veterinary College grounds here as part of the ongoing media sports, happened to see the senior students allegedly ragging the fresher behind the ground. On seeing the mediamen, one of the students fled the scene, while the other two reportedly entered into an altercation with the media personnel. Meanwhile, the SI from the SVU campus police, along with a few constables, landed on the scene and tried to round up the senior students. After an initial standoff between the police and the college authorities on arresting the students, the row ended as the principal suspended the three seniors from the college for 15 days. Nellore Staff Reporter writes: Taking up the recent ragging incidents suo motu based on reports both in the print and electronic media, State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Secretary S Chellappa visited the Narayana Engineering College here and Visvodaya Institute of Technology and Science (VITS) in Kavali on Tuesday.
SHRC official's visit
The SHRC Secretary visited hostels of both the colleges where ragging incidents had reportedly occurred recently and also talked to students as well as faculty of the engineering colleges to ascertain facts. The Secretary said "Despite ragging incidents, both colleges have not taken any preventive measures to check such type of incidents at their institutions in future. And surprisingly, the police too have not acted against the managements, which is against the spirit of the Constitution," he said.
