BSNL, SAI are champions

KURIANOOR: BSNL, Thiruvananthapuram, and SAI, Thalassery, won the men's and women's titles respectively in the all-Kerala basketball tournament here on Tuesday.

BSNL edged out Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, 74-67 in a match that went into extra-time. The teams were tied 60-60 at the end of regulation time.

Mar Ivanios fought back brilliantly in the third and fourth quarters, after trailing 12-31 at end of half time, to push the match into extra-time.

The women's final also went into extra-time with SAI getting the better of Assumption College, Changanassery, 77-76 after both teams were level 57-57 at full time.

The results: Finals:

Men: BSNL, Thiruvananthapuram, 74 (Abhilash 19, P.S. Arun 19, Monish Wilson 13, M. Anoop 10) bt Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, 67 (Shinumon Augustine 19, V.S. Manu 15, Rubin Raj 14).

Women: SAI, Thalassery, 77 (Reshma 19, Anu Mathw 18, Smitha 12) bt Assumption College, Changanassery, 76 (Renjusha Mathew 22, Naicy 22, K.S. Anu 13).

Central Zone in command

Arun Paulouse's knock of 120 put Central Zone in command at stumps on the second day of a State under-22 inter-zone cricket tournament match against North Zone at the Agriculture College ground at Vellayani, near Thiruvananthapuram, on Tuesday.

Overnight rain delayed the start of the match, but after that there was no respite for the North Zone bowlers who struggled to contain the Central batsmen. Arun, resuming at 30, piled on the agony for North Zone along with Abhishiek Hegde (50 batting) and captain Robert Fernandez (41 batting). For North Zone, Sahadh (three for 78) impressed with the ball. Central Zone was 322 for five at close for an overall lead of 201.

The scores: North Zone 121 v Central Zone 322 for five in 77 overs (Arun Paulouse 120, Abhishek Hegde 50 batting, Robert Fernandez 41 batting, Arun Alex 36, Sahadh three for 78).

BVM in final

Neeraj A. Koshy, with 20 points, helped host Bhavan's Vidya Mandir beat Rajagiri Public School (Kalamassery) 48-35 and enter the boys' final of the Bhavan's inter-school basketball tournament at Elamakkara, Kochi, on Tuesday. Chinmaya Vidyalaya (Vaduthala) defeated Naval Public School in the other semifinal.

Boys: Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara 48 (Neeraj A. Koshy 20, V.Vishnu 17) bt Rajagiri, Kalamassery 35; Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala 45 (Giridhar 16) bt Naval Public School, Willingdon Island 39 (Abhishek 10).

Girls: St. Peter's, Kadayiruppu 28 (Hannah 13) bt Naval PS 23 (Chandini 11).
