CAP moves High Court

CHENNAI: The Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) has moved the Madras High Court for restraining the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its officers from conducting the 77th annual general body meeting on September 27 and 28 in Mumbai.

Justice M.E.N. Patrudu, before whom the writ petition filed by the honorary secretary of the CAP, P. Damodaren, came up for admission on Tuesday, adjourned the matter to Thursday to enable the BCCI to submit its reply.

In his petition, Mr. Damodaren said the promotion and spread of cricket in the Union Territory of Pondicherry had been "totally neglected wilfully by the BCCI in collusion with its motivated constituent-member, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association."

Despite several letters from administrators, including the Chief Minister of Pondicherry, the BCCI had not recognised the CAP, he said, adding that full membership should be accorded to the CAP to function as the Central Controlling Body of cricket in the union territory.

Citing an earlier petition filed by him, the petitioner said the BCCI should be directed to strictly adhere to rules and grant membership to only central control bodies of cricket in states and union territories as it would ensure that benefits, grants and other entitlements were distributed equally.

Assailing the proposed general body meeting, the petitioner said unless the BCCI officers were restrained from conducting the meeting, the CAP would be greatly prejudiced, as the Union Territory would not be appropriately represented.

"On the contrary, no prejudice will be caused to the BCCI if the 77th AGM is not conducted till such time the writ petition is heard and disposed of on merits," he said.
