Madrid: Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian gained from the last minute withdrawal of the third seeded Korean combination of Kyung Won Lee and Hyo Jung Lee to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the World badminton championship here on Tuesday. Jwala and Shruti, who are yet to be tested in the tournament as they got a bye in the first round, could not have expected more from the lady luck. The Koreans were forced to pull out from the meet due to back injury to Hyo Jung. The Indian pair would face the winner of the match between Japanese Kumiko Ogura and Reiko Shiota and Malaysian Chew Yen Fong and Phui Leng See for a place in the quarterfinal.
Chetan, Saina lose
India's campaign in the singles, however, started on a sour note on Monday with both the top players of the country Chetan Anand and Saina Nehwal bowing out of the men's and women's sections respectively. Chetan lost to World No. 5 Lee Hyun-Il of South Korea 21-18, 18-21, 21-10, while Saina was beaten 21-10, 21-16 by China's Jiang Yanjiao. Meanwhile, Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas made it to the second round in men's doubles with a facile 21-10, 21-12 win against the Russian duo of Vladimir Malkov and Konstantin Khlestov. The Indian duo will now take on the Albertus Susanto Njoto-Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama pair from Hong Kong in the second round. Agencies
