Arvind Aaron

CHENNAI: Asian U-12 champion Padmini Rout of Orissa played a sparkling combination to defeat teammate Aparajita Gochhikar in the opening round of the 33rd St. Joseph's National Women's `B' chess championship here on Tuesday.

In a rook and opposite colour bishop ending, Padmini sacrificed the rook and then the bishop with a check in successive moves to promote a brand new queen and win in dazzling style.

Otherwise, round one saw a sedate start punctuated with a couple of power failures. Defending champion and seventh seed Supriya Maji of Bengal was one of the early winners after she checkmated Priyanka Kumari of Jharkhand with black pieces in 27 moves.

Most of the other seeds had to work hard for their opening point.

Top seed Nimmy George of Kerala won a piece early for two pawns and later also won a queen for rook to defeat Mitali Patil in 61 moves. Third seed Kiran Monisha Mohanty of Orissa won a pawn against Mohana Sengupta (Bengal) and grinded it to win by queening first. Some of the day's lucky winners include Iswarya Shobana, who lost two pieces for a rook and then beat her Tamil Nadu state mate Apurva G.
