News Analysis
The sentence in "Madhu Koda to lead UPA Government" (September 15, 2006, page 1) was: "The selection of Mr. Koda as Chief Minister-designate by the UPA has created history as it is for the first time in the country that an independent MLA has been chosen to lead a coalition consisting of mainstream parties such as the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)." A few readers said it was incorrect. A reader also wanted to know in what context the word "coalition" had been used. Venkitesh Ramakrishnan clarifies that the readers are right. Madhu Koda is the fourth independent chief minister. The word "coalition" was used in the context of the present ministry on account of two factors. First: At the time of writing the news item, the Congress leadership had indicated that it was revising its stance of "outside support" and would join the ministry. The party could well be a part of the government in spite of the confusion at present. Second: The Congress, JMM and RJD are part of a UPA co-ordination committee in Jharkhand. In the review "Biography of Shakespeare" ("Book Review" page, September 19, 2006), "Christopher Marlow" should have been spelt as "Christopher Marlowe", and "Blackfriers" as "Blackfriars". The sentence in "Where the past still lives" (The Hindu-Magazine, September 17, 2006, page 8) was: "Not to be outdone, one maharaja, who had taken a fancy to a young Englishwoman whose translucent complexion and doll-like features had a lot of brawny lads vying for her attentions, decided to whisk her away to his eerie." As a reader points out, it should have been "eyrie". Is it "piped" or "pipped", asks a reader, referring to the report "Earning their stars, with élan" (Chennai city, September 17, 2006, page 2). The text said a lady cadet was "piped". It should have been "pipped". The Indian Military Academy website clarifies that it is "the pipping of stars (wearing badges of rank of an officer)", or the "pipping ceremony". (A similar query was clarified in "Corrections and Clarifications", June 14, 2006). The strapline in the report "Tomato growers asked to form mutually-aided societies" (Andhra Pradesh, September 18, 2006, page 3) was: "Farmers urged not to resort to stop distress sales". As a reader points out, it should have been "Farmers urged not to resort to distress sales". It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
