Letters to the Editor
In the article "A complicated relationship" (Open Page, Sept. 17), the writer has correctly observed that the student-teacher relationship is built on the comfort level the teacher can provide to the student. Able teachers generally have a sound knowledge of their subject, good communication skills, and a sense of humour to enliven classrooms that consist of students with varying degrees of intelligence, attitude, and concentration levels. Such teachers strain every nerve to keep the class lively without compromising quality. It is they whom students revere and look up to for guidance and advice.

Corporal punishment and fear of being punished lead to students developing a serious complex. Fear hampers their personality development. Teachers must justify their reverential position by guiding the students properly.

Most of the teachers are good but they face huge classrooms with students from diverse backgrounds. If a teacher is given the freedom to act independently and comfortably, the relationship between the teacher and the taught will surely flourish.
