PCL's expansion plans

Special Correspondent

Implements Rs. 70 cr. project in Falta

KOLKATA: Pacific Cotspin Ltd (PCL), a yarn manufacturer, is implementing a Rs. 70 crore expansion project under the Technology Upgradation Fund of the Central Government.

The investment, to be made at a location adjacent to its existing unit at the Falta Special Economic Zone, will nearly double the company's capacity from 30,528 to 55,728 spindles. The project will enable PCL to add combed compact cotton yarn to its existing product range of combed and carded yarn and organic cotton yarn, according to Ashok Mehra, Chairman of the company. Production will increase from 6,500 to 8,300 tonnes,

On completion of the expansion project, the turnover is set to rise from Rs. 125 crore to Rs. 285 crore. The project will provide direct employment to 700 persons.

Laying the foundation for the project at the FSEZ, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddadeb Bhattacharjee said the State had identified four districts — Bardhhaman, Bankura, Birbhum and South 24 Parganas — for cotton cultivation. The soil testing had already been done. This measure would help exporters in this region, since they already enjoyed the benefit of low production costs, he said.
