BANGALORE: Protesting against the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BMP) decision to set up a modern slaughterhouse on a 40-acre land in Iglur village, residents of Iglur, Chandapura and surrounding villages of Anekal taluk will hold a religious convention at the identified site on Monday.

Stating that the abattoir should not be set up in Iglur or anywhere in the State, the residents had staged a demonstration and formed a human chain at the Chandapura Circle recently.

They also blocked National Highway No 7, which adjoins the villages.

According to Dayanand Swamy, convenor of the Federation of Karnataka State Organisations Against Mechanised Slaughter House, over 5,000 residents are expected to gather for the religious convention on Monday.

He said that the villagers used the land identified for the slaughterhouse to hold religious functions and the annual "Hosarayappa Jatre" in April-May every year.

"This site is adjacent to the Karnataka Housing Board's proposed Surya City and close to Electronics City and Narayana Hrudayalaya.

"The Kodagikere, which is the main source of water supply to all villages in Anekal taluk is just next to this land," he said.

Religious heads of various maths, including Shivarudra Swamy of Belimath, Renuka Shivacharya Swamy of Rajapur Samsthana Math and Dayanand Swamy of Basava Dharma Jnana Peeta, will participate in the convention.

Chandapura Gram Panchayat president R. Nagaratnamma Venkatswamy, chairman and managing director of Narayana Hrudayalaya Devi Prasad Shetty, former Ministers Ramalinga Reddy, B.N. Bachche Gowda and general secretary of Akhil Karnataka Prani Daya Sangha are expected to attend the convention, according to Mr. Dayanand Swamy.
