New Delhi: Socialite Bina Ramani, charged with destruction of evidence after the murder of Jessica Lall in her restaurant and an accused in a cheating-cum-forgery case, on Saturday walked to freedom after spending nine days in custody. The 63-year-old Ms. Ramani was released late in the evening from Tihar jail where she spent three days and nights, a day after a local court granted her bail in the case lodged against her by the Delhi Police. She had to spend an extra day in jail as the order granting her bail came late on Friday evening and was handed over to prison authorities only this afternoon. She was lodged in Jail No 6, which houses women inmates in Asia's largest prison. Ms. Ramani, who was arrested in Goa on September 6, had spent six days in police custody before being remanded to judicial custody. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder also took her to Goa during the period. However, the release will only be an interim relief for her as the police have named her an accused in a destruction of evidence case registered on March 6 in connection with the murder. A more serious charge, she could be arrested in the case. While granting the bail, the court asked her to surrender the passport and not to leave the country without its prior permission. It also directed her to report to the Investigating Officer of the case on first Saturday of every month. -- PTI
