Delhi planning military bases expansion: ULFA

Special Correspondent

Guwahati : The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Friday alleged that the Union Government plans to displace hundreds of people in Assam by acquiring 3600 hectares to expand military bases. In a statement, ULFA Chief Paresh Baruah claimed that New Delhi was planning to set up a nuclear research centre to process uranium from Meghalaya on the land acquired.

"Once completed, the project would force the eviction of innocent peace loving people, destruction of tea gardens, destruction of habitations of innumerable number of flora and fauna and widespread destruction of ecosystem of the area," he alleged. Mr. Baruah claimed that the Centre had recently asked the Assam Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue), to allot land for defence installations at Changsari and Misa bases.
