Plea to streamline procedure for appointment of High Court judges
|
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of two petitions seeking a direction to frame proper guidelines and streamline the procedure for High Court Judges appointments.
A Bench, comprising Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice C.K. Thakker, disposed of the petitions filed by the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) and its former President S. Prabhakaran and the Revenue Bar Association (RBA) and its President Aravind Datar for a direction to the Centre to expedite appointment of judges for the Madras High Court.
In December 2005, the Bench asked senior counsel K. K. Venugopal, appearing for the MHAA, to give suggestions to plug loopholes in the present procedure to Attorney General Milon K. Banerjee to enable the Centre to look into them.
The petitions were filed, as there was an inordinate delay in making appointments to the High Court. Even as the petitions were pending, the Centre appointed 17 Judges and subsequently several appointments were made.
On Friday, Mr. Venugopal told the court that suggestions had been given to Mr. Banerjee.
The procedure of sending the recommendations six months prior to arising of vacancy should be adhered to. The Attorney General said a large number of vacancies had been filled in the High Court and he submitted a list to the Bench for its perusal. He said the matter be disposed of.
