Chemplast has Mumbai on the mat

Principal Correspondent

HYDERABAD : Defending champion Chemplast restricted Mumbai to 167 for eight in 71.3 overs when bad light stopped play, 57 minutes before the scheduled close in the semifinal of the all-India Moin-ud-Dowla Gold Cup invitation (three-day) cricket tournament at the Gymkhana Grounds here on Thursday.

Chemplast bowlers stuck to a decent line and length and accuracy. India discards T. Yohanan and L. Balaji bowled their heart out to send back openers Sahil Kukreja (8) and Ashok Kadam (23) cheaply.

But it was medium-pacer R. Satish who struck a major blow when he had Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer (21, 3 x 4) snapped up behind by Dinesh Karthik.

Thereafter there was nothing much to rave about except for a defiant knock by Rohit Sharma (46 runs 82 balls, 4 x 4, 1 x 6). Off-spinner Parida was in the thick of action. He first lured Rohit Sharma out to be smartly stumped by Karthik. Then Parida forced Abhijit Shetye to play an indiscreet stroke to be caught behind. To the delight of Chemplast captain Vasanth Saravanan, Satish chipped in with two more wickets in the post lunch session to have Mumbai reeling at 167 for eight.

In another semifinal, Hyderabad scored 262 in 89.3 overs against India Cements with A.T. Rayudu (46), N. Arjun Yadav (46) and Anirudh Singh (34) failing to convert the decent starts into big scores. V.V.S.Laxman pulled out by declaring himself unfit for the match.

The scores: Semifinals: At Gymkhana: Mumbai 167 for eight in 71.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 46) v Chemplast.

At Uppal Stadium: Hyderabad 262 in 89.3 overs (A.T. Rayudu 46, N. Arjun Yadav 46, Amarpreet Singh four for 58) v India Cements.
